Odvojen od obitelji Szpilman isprva preživljava u getu, a zatim izvan njega. Sve se teže živi u Varšavi, a Szpilman svaki dan svjedoči užasu koji oko sebe šire pripadnici SS-a.

Nekoliko godina nakon završetka Drugog svjetskog rata mladi južnjački pisac Stingo dolazi u newyoršku četvrt Brooklyn i useljava u prizemlje kuće na čijem prvom katu žive Poljakinja Sophie, koja je preživjela strahote Auschwitza, i njezin partner, newyorški Židov Nathan, koji se predstavlja kao biolog s harvardskom diplomom. Veza Sophie i Nathana vrlo je turbulentna zbog njegovih povremenih ispada, a Stingo postaje njihov najbolji prijatelj. S vremenom Sophie i Stingo postaju sve bliži, a Nathan sve ljubomorniji. Kako se zbližava sa Stingom, Sophie mu počne pričati o svom strašnom iskustvu iz Auschwitza.
