דניאל קרייג נכנס לנעלי העיתונאי החוקר, מיקאל בלומקוויסט, בעיבוד אמריקאי לספר הראשון בטרילוגיה המהוללת של השבדי סטיג לארסון. הבמאי דייויד פינצ'ר (מועדון קרב, שבעה חטאים) חוזר בגדול עם ההאקרית הגאונה, ליסבת סאלאנדר, שמסייעת לבלומקוויסט, לאחר שהלה נאלץ להשעות עצמו מתפקידו כעורך בז'ורנל חושפני.

בתחילת הסרט קשה קצת לעקוב אחר העלילה. 200 אנשיו של מלך נורת`מבריה שמגיעים לאנגליה והמיסתורין שאופף את הכל, יוצרים מעט בלבול. אך מהר מאוד דברים מתבהרים ונותר סרט הסטורי עתיר שמות ואורסון וולס שמקריין ועוזר לנתב את העלילה. נסיך ויקינג מוברח בילדותו מכפרו כיוון שמלך חדש עלה ומאיים על חייו. לאחר שנים חוזר הילד (עכשיו הוא טוני קרטיס) לאותו כפר כעבד אלמוני. הוא פוגש את קירק דאגלס (גם הוא ויקינג צעיר) מבלי לדעת כי הוא אחיו. לתמונה המסובכת נכנסת ג`אנט לי, ביתו של מלך וולס, שנלקחת לאישה ע"י מלך אנגליה הסאדיסט. דאגלס מתאהב בה נואשות אך היא מגלה עניין דווקא בקרטיס, כדי להוכיח שמשולשים רומנטיים היו כבר בתקופת הויקינגים.
