פארודיה על סרטי בלש פרטי ו"פילם-נואר", שבמרכזה עומד אדי מרפי, בתפקיד בלש פרטי, היוצא למצוא את "ילד הזהב", שנחטף בטיבט ונמצא, כנראה, בלוס אנג'לס. "ילד הזהב" הוא ילד בעל כוחות מאגיים, שנולד אחת לאלף שנים. מטרתו היא להביא טוב לעולם. האירועים מובילים את מרפי לטיבט ולהתרחשויות נוסח "שודדי התיבה האבודה". למרות מגרעותיו של הסרט, בולט מרפי בכשרונו כקומיקאי, מקורי ומשעשע.

The miniseries is a continuation of the classic story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, with science fiction and additional fantasy elements added.
