צרפת, 1770. מריאן, ציירת צעירה ויפה, נשכרת על מנת לצייר את דיוקנה של אלואיז בת המעמד הגבוה, לקראת חתונתה הקרבה. אלא שאלואיז לא מעוניינת להתחתן, ולכן מסרבת לשתף פעולה עם ההכנות לחתונה בכלל, ועם ציור הדיוקן בפרט. מריאן מחליטה להסתיר את העובדה שהיא ציירת ומציגה את עצמה כבת לוויה שנועדה להנעים את זמנה של אלואיז, ובד בבד היא מתבוננת בה, יום אחר יום, ומציירת אותה בסתר… "דיוקן של נערה עולה באש" הוא סרטה החדש של הבמאית הצרפתיה המוערכת סלין סיאמה ("חבצלות מים"). הסרט הוקרן לראשונה בפסטיבל קאן וסחף אחריו את הקהל והמבקרים, שהתרגשו מהבימוי עוצר הנשימה, הסיפור המרתק ומלא התשוקה והמשחק יוצא הדופן של שתי הכוכבות הצעירות של הסרט – אדל האנל ונעמי מרלן.

Jeppe Nygren takes over as deputy conductor of the Copenhagen Symphony Orchestra and is warmly welcomed by his new conductor, who speaks candidly about the musicians' peculiarities and olates. The conflict-ridden Jeppe quickly gets an example of these olates and happens to give the embittered second clarinetist Bo with a cursed promise of a solo part. But it has far-reaching consequences.
