כשהיו בתיכון, עמדו טד ומארי להיות זוג במסיבת הסיום של התיכון. עקב תאונה לא שגרתית שקרתה לטד, הם מעולם לא יצאו יחד. 13 שנים אחר כך, טד מבין שהוא עדיין מאוהב במארי. הוא שוכר חוקר פרטי, כדי לנסות ולאתר אותה. כאשר החוקר מגלה את מארי, הוא מתאהב בה ולכן הוא מעביר לטד מידע שקרי עליה ועושה שימוש במידע שאסף עליה, כדי לגרום לה לצאת דווקא איתו. כאשר טד מחליט להאבק ולהחזיר את מארי לחייו, מסתבך הכל.
גבר מוגבל בשכלו שהיה כלוא במוסד פסיכיאטרי שנים ארוכות, לאחר שרצח את אימו ומאהבה, משתחרר וחוזר אל העיירה בה גדל. הוא מצליח למצוא עבודה כמכונאי בעזרתו של מנהל המוסד בו שהה, ומתידד עם ילד קטן. בתחילה נראה כי הסביבה מצליחה לקבל את הגבר החריג (מפגר, מוגבל רגשית, בעל דיבור משונה ולא כל כך מובן, והליכה מגושמת) - מעסיקו החדש מרוצה ממנו, חברו הקטן מציע לו לעבור לגור איתו ועם אימו, והוא מתחיל להסתגל אט אט לחיים בחוץ, אותם למעשה מעולם לא הכיר. אלא שלצעירה יש חבר אלים, הפוגע בה ובילד, ובידידה הטוב של האם (ג`ון ריטר בתפקיד יוצא דופן) שהוא הומוסקסואל. למרות המחיר הברור והידוע מראש שעומד לשלם, אבל מתוך רגש-חובה להגן על הילד בכל מחיר (מתוך פיצוי לילדותו-שלו, הבנה והזדהות עם המצב הכל-כך לא מוגן), תורנטון יוצא מול החבר האלים של האם. דרמת-חריגים עשויה היטב אך רחוקה מלהפתיע או לחדש.
