Inaugurée le 19 juillet 1900, la première ligne de métro française dessert les stations parisiennes entre Porte Maillot et Porte de Vincennes. Déclaré d'utilité publique par une loi le 30 mars 1898, le métro est une réponse à la difficulté de circulation due au développement de la ville. Deux événements accélèrent également la conception du projet : l'Exposition universelle de 1900 et les Jeux olympiques d'été de la même année qui se déroulent au bois de Vincennes. Plus d'un siècle et 14 lignes plus tard, le métro parisien représente 220 kilomètres de voie et transporte chaque jour plus de cinq millions de voyageurs.
