Israelin tiedustelupalvelun agentti Zohan Dvir lavastaa kuolemansa voidakseen lähteä New Yorkiin ja elää unelmiensa elämää kampaajana. Roistojen jahtaaminen saa jäädä, kun Zohan alkaa raivata tietään tähtiin huippustylistinä. Dokumenttielokuvassa palataan vuoteen 1982, Israelin ja Libanonin välisen sodan aikoihin sekä erityisesti Sabran ja Shatilan palestiinalaiskylien verilöylyyn. Sodassa mukana ollut Folman huomasi vuosien jälkeen ettei muista tapahtumista enää mitään. Hän aloitti kokemustensa rekonstruoinnin ja ryhtyi puhumaan sodasta paitsi psykoterapeuttinsa myös silloisten ystäviensä ja armeijatovereidensa kanssa. Lopputuloksena on vaikuttava teos muistamisesta, unista ja sodan traumoista. Maailmalla monasti palkitussa elokuvassa on poikkeuksellinen muoto: Folman teki aiheesta animaatiodokumentin. Näin hän pääsi paremmin kiinni aiheeseen: mukana on paitsi vuoden 1982 sotatapahtumia myös epäluotettavia muistikuvia, houreita ja painajaisia.

1960-luvulla ryhmä Israelin agentteja saa tehtäväkseen etsiä Adolf Eichmannin, Natsin, joka tunnetaan myös holokaustin arkkitehtinä. Eichmannin uskotaan piileskelevän Argentiinassa, josta agenttien tehtävänä on tuoda hänet Israeliin vastaamaan teoistaan.

6. lokakuuta 1973, Israelin pyhimpänä päivänä Ramadanin aikaan, Egyptin ja Syyrian joukkojen liittouma käynnisti Siinain niemimaalle ja Golanin kukkuloille yllätyshyökkäyksen. Israelin omana rautarouvanakin tunnettu pääministeri Golda Meir taistelee päivästä toiseen aikaa vastaan, vaakalaudalla miljoonat ihmiskohtalot konfliktin molemmin puolin. Kun helpotusta tilanteeseen ei ole luvassa, paikallisen kuppilan pitäjät ja kanta-asiakkaat, etunenässä rempseä Dina, ottavat eksyneet, pettyneet, uupuneet ja nälkäiset soittajat hoiviinsa.
