Tapahtumat sijoittuvat idylliseen Radegundin vuoristokylään, jonka sopuisassa kyläyhteisössä Franz elää maanviljelijän yksinkertaista elämää kolmen pienen tyttärensä, vaimonsa ja tämän sisaren kanssa. Kun natsi-Saksa vyöryy Itävaltaan ja maan hallinto aloittaa yhteistyön Hitlerin kanssa, myös Radegundin miehiä kutsutaan sotajoukkoihin.
