Toisen maailmansodan aikaan teoreettinen fyysikko J. Robert Oppenheimer saa tehtäväkseen luoda Yhdysvalloille uuden superaseen, atomipommin, jolla sota voitaisiin lopettaa yhdellä räjäytyksellä. Vuonna 1943 perustettu Manhattan-projekti Los Alamosin salaisessa laboratoriossa johti ydinaseen ensimmäisen testaamiseen Alamogordossa. 16. heinäkuuta 1945 toteutettu Trinity-ydinkoe oli luokassaan ensimmäinen, ja siitä alle kuukausi myöhemmin Yhdysvallat tiputtivat kaksi kohtalokasta ydinpommia Hiroshimaan ja Nagasakiin 6. ja 9. elokuuta päättäen käytännössä toisen maailmansodan. Kun Yhdysvaltain atomienergiakomission puheenjohtaja Lewis Straussin matkaa kohti senaattia ja yhä suurempaa valtaa kylmän sodan alkaessa, Oppenheimer ymmärtää olevansa osaltaan vastuussa ydinasevarustelusta ja ihmiskuntaa uhkaavasta mahdollisesta ydinsodasta. Uransa loppupuolella naiivina idealistina hän joutuu vielä keskelle oikeussalidraamaa, poliittisen valtapelin ja juonittelun kynsiin.
