The Producers perustuu menestyksekkääseen Broadway-musikaaliiin, joka taas perustuu Mel Brooksin vuonna 1968 ohjaamaan klassikkokomediaan. Susan Stromanin uusintaohjauksella on itse Brooksin siunaus. Elokuvan vahvuus ja heikkous ovat sen musikaalikohtaukset, jotka liian suurellisina eivät aina toimi elokuvassa satiirisena osana. Näyttelijäkaarti pelastaa ajoitustaidollaan paljon.
