Elokuva perustuu Ben Fountainin samannimiseen romaaniin, joka kuvaa valtavaa eroa Irakin sodan todellisuuden ja tavallisten amerikkalaisten mielikuvien välillä. Uutiskuvaajan sattumalta tallentaman tulitaistelun ansiosta joukko-osasto Bravo ja erityisesti Billy Lynn ovat kohonneet sotasankareiksi ja heidät määrätään mainoskiertueelle tukemaan George W.
