Saksalaiset perustivat vuonna 1943 maksimisuojatun Stalag Luft III -sotavankileirin, joka suunniteltiin kestämään nerokkaimmatkin pakoyritykset. Näin tehdessään he täyttivät leirin vangeilla, jotka kaikki ovat tunnettuja useista pakoyrityksistään.
