Toisen maailmansodan aikaan teoreettinen fyysikko J. Robert Oppenheimer saa tehtäväkseen luoda Yhdysvalloille uuden superaseen, atomipommin, jolla sota voitaisiin lopettaa yhdellä räjäytyksellä. Vuonna 1943 perustettu Manhattan-projekti Los Alamosin salaisessa laboratoriossa johti ydinaseen ensimmäisen testaamiseen Alamogordossa. 16. heinäkuuta 1945 toteutettu Trinity-ydinkoe oli luokassaan ensimmäinen, ja siitä alle kuukausi myöhemmin Yhdysvallat tiputtivat kaksi kohtalokasta ydinpommia Hiroshimaan ja Nagasakiin 6. ja 9. elokuuta päättäen käytännössä toisen maailmansodan.
