Uutta alkua kaipaa myös sodan aikana siirreltyjen rajalinjojen ja vaihtelevien hallitsijoiden rikki repimä avioliitto Erzsébet-vaimon kanssa. László on yksin vieraalla maalla ja asettuu Pennsylvaniaan, missä varakas ja vaikutusvaltainen teollisuuspohatta Harrison Lee Van Buren kiinnittää huomiota hänen kykyihinsä.
