Francis Ford Coppolan eeppisessä mestariteoksessa Marlon Brando sai Oscarin roolistaan Corleone perheen johtohahmona. Brandon esittämä Don Corleone ei ole elokuvaversiossa niin selkeä päähenkilö kuin Mario Puzon romaanissa. Sen sijaan huomio keskittyy varsin pian Don Corleonen poikaan Michaeliin, jonka varassa saaga etenee loppuunsa. Ohjaaja Coppola maalaa hyytävän muotokuvan sisilialaisen mafiaperheen vallan noususta ja laskusta Amerikassa.
