پس از اینکه بیگانگان با سفینه‌های فضایی خود در اطراف زمین مستقر می‌شوند، یک زبان‌شناس متخصص بنام لوئیس بنکس (امی آدامز) توسط ارتش استخدام می‌شود تا بفهمد هدف آنها از آمدن به زمین چیست...

داستان «جنگ فردا» در مورد گروهی از سفرکنندگان در زمان است که به سال ۲۰۵۱ می‌روند تا پیامی فوری به دنیا بدهند: اینکه ۳۰ سال بعد بشر در جنگ علیه موجوداتی فضایی مغلوب خواهد شد. تنها امید برای بقا این است که سربازان و شهروندان به آینده سفر کنند و به مبارزه ملحق شوند. در میان این افراد یک معلم دبیرستان و مرد خانواده به نام «دن فورستر» با بازی پرت است که مصمم به نجات دنیا برای دختر جوانش است. دن برای بازنویسی سرنوشت سیاره‌اش با یک دانشمند نابغه با بازی «ایوان استراهاوسکی» و پدرش با بازی «جی.کی. سیمونز» همکاری می‌کند.

هنگامی که خطر اردوگاه را تهدید می‌کند، نارو جنگجوی کومانچی خشن و بسیار ماهر برای محافظت از مردم خود به راه می‌افتد. اما طعمه‌ای که او دنبال می‌کند یک شکارچی بیگانه بسیار تکامل‌یافته با یک زرادخانه فنی پیشرفته است.

یک مکانیک به همراه دخترش چیزی را کشف می‌کنند که باعث می‌شود اتوبوت‌ها و دیسپتیکون‌ها و همین‌طور مأموران دولتی به سمت آن دو کشیده شوند...

موجود فضایی بیگانه ای به نام «ئی.تی.» از سفینه ی فضایی اش که در جنگلی در حومه ی لس آنجلس فرود آمده، جا می ماند و در حیاط خلوت خانه ای پناه می گیرد که در آن «الیوت» ده ساله زندگی می کند. خیلی زود «الیوت»، «ئی. تی.» را می بیند و دوستی و اعتمادش را جلب می کند.

۵۷ سال از زمانی که «اِلن ریپلی» برای اولین بار با موجودات بیگانه روبرو شده می گذرد و سفینهٔ نجات حامل وی، او را در حالت خلسه (خواب مصنوعی) در خود نگاه می‌داشت و به‌صورت سرگردان در فضا چرخان است. بر روی کرهٔ زمین هیچ‌کس داستان وی در مورد وجود آدم فضایی در سیارهٔ LV-426 را باور نمی‌کند. اداره‌ای که با نام «کمپانی» شناخته می‌شود، گروهی را مأمور می‌کند تا به LV-426 بروند و صحت این مطالب را بررسی کنند. پس از مدتی تمامی ارتباطات با گروه فرستاده‌شده قطع می‌شود و «کمپانی»، اِلن ریپلی و گروهی از سربازان بسیار حرفه‌ای را برای بررسی و نجات گروه قبلی به LV-426 می‌فرستد….

زمانی که تفسیر غلطی از بازی های کلاسیک ارائه می شود، شخصیت های محبوب بازی های کامپیوتری مانند Pac-Man و Donkey Kong آن را به عنوان اعلام جنگ می پندارند و همانند موجودات بیگانه به زمین حمله میکنند...
