مشت زنی درجه چندم و گمنام به نام «راک بالبوا» (استالون) از راه شرکت در مسابقه های بوکس شرطی و غیرقانونی و جمع آوری طلب های یک نزول خوار زندگی فقیرانه ای را می گذراند. تا این که قهرمان بوکس سنگین وزن جهان، «آپولو» (ودرز)، برای تبلیغ و رسیدن به محبوبیت بیش تر، تصمیم می گیرد تا مسابقه ای نمایشی با یک مشت زن گم نام برگزار کند. به این منظور «راکی» انتخاب می شود…

آپولو کرید، رقیب سابق و دوست فعلی راکی، در مسابقه ای با ضربه ی چپ کوبنده ی بوکسوری غول پیکر از شوروی به نام ایوان دراگو (لوندگرن) بر زمین می افتد و می میرد. راکی نیز عنوان خود را می گذارد تا بتواند در مسابقه ای غیر رسمی با دراگوی آماتور، در خود شوروی شرکت کند.

«راکی» (استالون) هنوز غم از دست دادن همسرش را می‌خورد که سه سال پیش بر اثر بیماری سرطان درگذشته است. وقتی «میسن» (تارور)، قهرمان سنگین وزن بوکس، احتیاج پیدا می‌کند شهرت خود را احیا کند، کارگزارش به «راکی» پیشنهاد می‌دهد آن دو مسابقه‌ای نمایشی برگزار کنند...

وقتی «جیمز چمبرز» (رامس)، قهرمان سنگین وزن بوکس که به خاطر اذیت و آزار مردم متهم و محکوم شده، وارد زندان می‌شود، «هاچن» (اسنایپس) که قهرمان محفل غیر رسمی بوکسورهای زندان به شمار می‌آید، در وجود او رقیبی سرسخت می‌بیند...

راکی ( سیلوستر استالونه ) بعد از بردن مقابل آپولو در چند مسابقه دیگر نیز برنده میشود و وقت خود را صرف امور خیریه، خانواده و همسرش آدریان ( تالیا شیر ) میکند و قصد دارد خود را بازنشسته اعلام کند اما بوکسری بنام کلوبر برای راکی خط و نشان میکشد و خواهان یک مسایقه با اوست. میکی ( بورگس مردیت ) به راکی پیشنهاد میده تا با او مسابقه ندهد اما راکی که حریفش کلوبر را جدی نگرفته با تمرینات سبک خود را برای مسابقه آماده میکند. راکی مسابقه را می بازد و با مرگ میکی، آپولو ( کارل واترز ) مربی او شده تا راکی را برای مسابقه ای دیگر با کلوبر آماده کند…

آپولو خواستار این است که یک بار دیگر با راکی مبارزه کرده و آبروی رفته خود را بازیابد . از طرفی راکی که به تازگی با آدریان ازدواج کرده، با مشکلات بی شمار و البته تازه ای دست و پنجه نرم می کند و …

س از پیروزی راکی بالبوآ (سیلوستراستالونه ) بر دراگو ، او پی می برد که حسابدار نادرستش در معاملاتی که انجام داده ، نه تنها میلیون ها دلار از دست داده بلکه مالیات شش سال را هم نپرداخته است . راکی ناچار می شود تمام دارایی خود به استثنای باشگاه قدیمی اش را بفروشد . معاینه های پزشکی نشان می دهد که او به دلیل ضایعه های مغزی نمی تواند مسابقه بدهد . در این زمان او تامی ( تامی موریسون ) مشتزن جوان و بی نام و نشان را زیر پر و بال خود می گیرد و مربیش می شود . تامی پس از چند پیروزی محرمانه قراردادی با دوک ( تونی برتون ) ترتیب دهنده سرشناس مسابقات می بندد و مردم او را به جهت خیانت به راکی هو می کنند . سرانجام تامی به تشویق دوک ،در خیابان با راکی مبارزه می کند ، ولی شکست سختی می خورد .
