کاپیتان پیت «ماوریک»، خلبان آزمایشی، پس از سی سال خدمت، عمداً از ارتقای رتبه خود طفره رفته‌است. یک روز ماوریک فراخوانده می‌شود تا مسئولیت آموزش گروهی از فارغ التحصیلان تاپ گان را برای یک مأموریت تخصصی به دستور همکار دوست هوانورد نیروی دریایی و رقیب سابق خود دریاسالار تام «ایس من» کازانسکی، که فرمانده اقیانوس آرام ایالات متحده است، به عهده بگیرد.
