Tema Majesteedi salateenistuse parim agent Lorraine Broughton on osav spioon, kel ei jää vajaka ka sensuaalsusest ja metsikusest, ning kes on valmis oma oskusi võimatul missioonil ellu jäämiseks ära kasutama. Ta saadetakse kokkuvarisemise äärel Berliinist hindamatut toimikut ära tooma. Sealse osakonnajuhi David Percivali näol leiab ta partneri, kes aitab tal eluohtlikest spioonimängudest võitjana välja tulla.

Kahtlast surmajuhtumit uurima läinud Bond saab kiiresti kätte mitu juhtotsa, mis Nõukogude poolele viitavad. Ta leiab hämmastava seose selle muna, salakaubitsejate ning Nõukogude sõjaväe vahel. Tundub, et mässajalik Vene kindral üritab algata Kolmandat Maailmasõda.

Ülimalt tähtis Briti Mereväe logistikalaev satub läbi õnnetuse vana meremiini otsa ning upub. Laeva pardal asuv kõrgtehnoloogiline kodeerimisseade ATAC on vaja nüüd kiirelt üles leida, sest selle abil kordineeritakse Mereväe tuumaallveelaevu.
