Pii Patel, loomaaia juhataja poeg ja veendunud jumalaarmastaja, tunneb kiindumust mitte ainult oma rahvuse usu, hinduismi, vaid ka kristluse ja islami vastu. Kui Pii on 16-aastane, otsustab tema perekond koos loomaaialoomadega emigreeruda Jaapani kaubalaeva pardal Indiast Põhja-Ameerikasse. Paraku läheb laev põhja ning Pii leiab end päästepaadist, kus tema kaaslasteks on hüään, orangutang, haavatud sebra ja 450 naela kaaluv bengali tiiger.
