Märksõna Duel

Film mis põhineb tõestisündinud lool, võtab fookusesse Prantsusmaa ajaloo viimase kõrgeima riigivõimu poolt sanktsioneeritud duelli, kus ristasid relvad Jean de Carrouges ja Jacques Le Gris kaks sõpra, kellest said tulised rivaalid. Kui Carrougesi abikaasa Marguerite satub Le Grisi armutu ja ootamatu kallaletungi ohvriks, otsustab naine mitte vaikida ja süüdistab Le Grisi enda vägistamises. See vapper vastuhakk toonastele seadustele ja käitumisnormidele seab aga tema enda elu surmaohtu. Kui Carrouges seejärel Le Grisle väljakutse esitab ning ta kuni ühe osapoole surmani kestvale duellile kustub, võetakse seda kui kõigevägevama kohtumõistmist, kus õigus jääb sellele kes duellis ellu jääb. Seega kui Le Gris peaks Marguerite abikaasa duelli käigus tapma, tähendaks see mehe süütust ning naist ennast ootaks „valevandumise“ eest surmanuhtlus.
