Αρχές του 20ού αιώνα. Η Βέρα Μπρίτεν, μια ασυγκράτητη, έξυπνη και ανοιχτόμυαλη κοπέλα, ξεπερνάει τις προκαταλήψεις της οικογένειας της και κερδίζει μια υποτροφία στην Οξφόρδη. Εκεί θα γνωρίσει τον έρωτα στο πρόσωπο του καλύτερου φίλου του αδελφού της, τον Ρόλαντ Λέιτον. Όμως, ο Α` Παγκόσμιος Πόλεμος ξεσπάει και καθώς οι δύο άντρες φεύγουν για το μέτωπο, η Βέρα κατατάσσεται στις νοσοκόμες για να υπηρετήσει την πατρίδα.

Ο Τζάκι είναι ένας μοναχικός νέος, που εργάζεται στη φάρμα με βοοειδή του θείου του. Μια μέρα, ένας αδίστακτος κτηνίατρος τον προσεγγίζει για να συνάψουν μία ύποπτη συμφωνία. Η δολοφονία ενός αστυνομικού και η αναπάντεχη συνάντηση του Τζάκι με έναν άνδρα από το σκοτεινό παρελθόν του θα πυροδοτήσουν μία αλληλουχία εξελίξεων με συνέπειες που κανείς δεν μπορεί να προβλέψει.

The even episodes tell exactly the same events, only through the eyes of the criminals inside and their victims.
