Προτού γίνει προστάτης, ο Κένσιν ήταν ένας τρομερός δολοφόνος γνωστός ως Μπατόσαϊ. Γνωρίζοντας όμως τη γλυκιά Τόμοε Γιουκίσιρο, η ιστορία του αρχίζει να αλλάζει.

Ο θρυλικός δολοφόνος Κενσιν Χιμούρα, δέκα χρόνια μετά την Επανόρθωση Μέιτζι έχει γίνει ένας περιπλανώμενος σαμουράι. Προσφέρει βοήθεια και προστατεύει όσους το χρειάζονται για να ξεπληρώσει τις παλιές του αμαρτίες. Στο ταξίδι του προς το Τόκιο, συναντάει την Καόρου Καμίγια, την ιδιοκτήτρια και δασκάλα ενός Ντοτζο ξιφασκίας. Η Καόρου προσκαλεί τον Κένσιν να μείνει στο Ντότζο της. Η σχέση τους εξελίσσεται περισσότερο αλλά το παρελθόν του Κένσιν επιστρέφει για να τον στοιχειώσει.

Το 1879, ο Κένσιν και οι σύμμαχοί του έρχονται αντιμέτωποι με τον ισχυρότερο εχθρό τους: τον πρώην κουνιάδο του, Ενίσι Γιουκίσιρο, και τους φιλέκδικους ακόλουθούς του.

Μετά την ήττα του από τον Σισίο, ο Κένσιν πέφτει στην θάλασσα για να σώσει την Καόρου. Το άτομο που τον σώζει είναι κάποιος από το παρελθόν του, ο παλιός του δάσκαλος που θα του διδάξει την τελευταία κίνηση της τεχνικής Χίτεν Μιτσουρούγκι. Εντωμεταξύ ο Σισίο με το μαύρο πλοίο του φτάνει στις ακτές του Τόκιο και απειλεί να το πυρπολήσει. Η κυβέρνηση υποκύπτει στις απαιτήσεις του και κηρύσσει τον Κένσιν ως φυγά και δολοφόνο της προηγούμενης εποχής του Σογκουνάτου. Για άλλη μια φορά ο Κένσιν θα αντιμετωπίσει με του συμμάχους του τον Σισίο και τον στρατό του.

Ο Κένσιν έχει συνηθίσει στην νέα ζωή του με την Καόρου και τους άλλους φίλους τους, όταν δέχεται ένα αίτημα από την Κυβέρνηση Μέιτζι. Ο Σισίο Μακότο, ένας πρώην δολοφόνος, επέζησε αφού τον πρόδωσαν και τον έκαψαν ζωντανό. Τώρα βρίσκεται στο Κιότο και συνωμοτεί με τους πολεμιστές που έχει συγκεντρώσει, να ρίξουν την νέα κυβέρνηση. Αντίθετα από την επιθυμία της Καόρου, ο Κένσιν, δέχεται να πάει στο Κιότο να πολεμήσει τον Σισίο και να ανατρέψει ένα νέο εμφύλιο πόλεμο.

Ryōmaden is the 49th NHK Taiga drama. It was shown on NHK from January 3 to November 28, 2010 spanning 48 episodes. The story centers on the life of 19th-century Japanese historical figures Iwasaki Yatarō and Sakamoto Ryōma. It has been announced that the series will be aired in several other countries, for example Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

Ten years have passed since the end of Bakumatsu, an era of war that saw the uprising of citizens against the Tokugawa shogunate. The revolutionaries wanted to create a time of peace, and a thriving country free from oppression. The new age of Meiji has come, but peace has not yet been achieved. Swords are banned but people are still murdered in the streets. Orphans of war veterans are left with nowhere to go, while the government seems content to just line their pockets with money.

Saigo Takamori, the hero of the Meiji Restoration, was born to a poor, low-ranking samurai family in the Satsuma domain (present day Kagoshima Prefecture). His simple honesty caught the attention of its charismatic feudal lord of Satsuma, Shimazu Nariakira. Nariakira’s assertion that the love of people is what will enrich and strengthen the nation captivated Saigo who took on Nariakira’s secret mission and eventually became a key person for Satsuma. Not a portrait of him survives today and much of his life is a mystery. He is a man who was twice exiled and thrice married. He overthrew the Tokugawa Shogunate with exceptional bravery and action. Although he accomplished the restoration, he lost his life in a fight with the new Meiji government.

In order to study swordsmanship, Ryoma heads for Edo where he meets many people who influence his thinking. He becomes close friends with men like Katsu Kaishu and Saigo Takamori and later establishes a naval training school in Kobe. Ryoma's controversial political views make him a target for shogunate assassins but his fervent belief in a classless society helps forge the Choshu-Satsuma alliance which ultimately brings about the Meiji Restoration.
