Τρεις χιλιάδες χρόνια πριν, οι μεγαλύτεροι ναυτικοί του κόσμου διέσχιζαν τον απέραντο Ειρηνικό, εξερευνώντας τα πολλά νησιά της Ωκεανίας. Αλλά κάπου εκεί, και για μια χιλιετία, τα ταξίδια σταμάτησαν και κανείς δεν γνωρίζει το γιατί. Η "Βαϊάνα", μια ριψοκίνδυνη έφηβη σαλπάρει σε μια τολμηρή αποστολή για να σώσει το λαό της. Κατά τη διάρκεια του ταξιδιού, η Βαϊάνα θα συναντήσει τον κάποτε ισχυρό ημίθεο Μάουι, που θα την καθοδηγήσει στο να γίνει μια εξαιρετική εξερευνήτρια. Μαζί θα ταξιδέψουν στα ανοιχτά συναντώντας γιγάντια τέρατα και αντίξοες συνθήκες, και στην πορεία η Βαϊάνα θα εκπληρώσει το όραμα των προγόνων της, ανακαλύπτοντας παράλληλα και αυτό που πάντα αναζητούσε: την πραγματική της ταυτότητα.

Επτά χρόνια μετά το χαμό της συζύγου του, ο εκκεντρικός Δόκτωρ Ντούλιτλ, ξακουστός γιατρός και κτηνίατρος της Βασίλισσας Βικτώρια, έχει απομονωθεί στην κατοικία του, με μοναδική συντροφιά τα εξωτικά του ζώα. Όταν όμως η νεαρή βασίλισσα αρρωσταίνει σοβαρά, ο αυτοεξόριστος Ντούλιτλ αναγκάζεται να αναχωρήσει για μια επικών διαστάσεων περιπέτεια ώστε να αναζητήσει το αντίδοτο σε ένα μυθικό νησί. Θα πρέπει να επανακτήσει λοιπόν τις ικανότητες και το κουράγιο του, καθώς θα αναζητήσει παλιούς αντιπάλους του και θα ανακαλύψει θαυμαστά πλάσματα. Την αναζήτηση του Ντούλιτλ θα συνοδεύει ένας νεαρός, αυτόκλητος μαθητευόμενος και μια τρελή κομπανία ζώων, η οποία περιλαμβάνει έναν ανήσυχο γορίλα, μια ενθουσιώδη αλλά ανόητη πάπια, μια κυνική στρουθοκάμηλο, μια αισιόδοξη πολική αρκούδα και έναν ισχυρογνώμονα παπαγάλο, ο οποίος μάλιστα εκτελεί χρέη εμπιστευτικού συμβούλου.

Στα τέλη του 18ου αιώνα το βρετανικό πλοίο Μπάουντι αποπλέει από το Πόρτσμουθ με προορισμό την Ταϊτή. Η βάναυση συμπεριφορά του καπετάνιου και το γεγονός ότι οι άντρες έχουν ναυτολογηθεί με το ζόρι οδηγούν το πλήρωμα σε ανταρσία.

Ο πόλεμος της Τροίας έχει τελειώσει και οι Έλληνες επιστρέφουν στα καράβια τους για το ταξίδι του γυρισμού. Ένας εξ αυτών κι ο Οδυσσέας με απώτερο προορισμό το βασίλειο του στην Ιθάκη. Ο δρόμος του, όμως, μέλει να είναι πολύ μακρύς.
