Πάνω από ένα χρόνο τώρα, ο Μπρους Γουέιν βυθίζεται στο σκοτάδι της Γκόθαμ ως ο Μπάτμαν που σπέρνει τον φόβο στις καρδιές των εγκληματιών. Όσο η κλίμακα του νοσηρού σχεδίου ξεδιπλώνεται, ο Μπάτμαν πρέπει να συνάψει καινούριες συμμαχίες, να αποκαλύψει τον ένοχο και να αποδώσει δικαιοσύνη για την κατάχρηση εξουσίας και τη διαφθορά που έχουν καταστρέψει την Γκόθαμ Σίτι.

Ο Μπρους Γουέιν έχει πλέον αποσυρθεί από την καταπολέμηση του εγκλήματος και έχει παραχωρήσει πλέον την κάπα του Μπάτμαν, στον μαθητή λυκείου, Τέρι Μακ Γκίνις. Ο Μπάτμαν του μέλλοντος, Τέρι, στην προσπάθεια του να αποκαλύψει τα σκοτεινά μυστικά του Τζόκερ, ανακαλύπτει τι πραγματικά συνέβη τη μοιραία νύχτα που ο Μπατμαν αντιμετώπισε το μεγαλύτερο εχθρό του για τελευταία φορά. Τότε, που ο Μπρους κόντεψε να πεθάνει. Ο μικρός Τέρι, παίρνει όρκο να εκδικηθεί για λογαριασμό του αγαπημένου του φίλου και δασκάλου, να κατατροπώσει την συμμορία και να βάλει τον μοχθηρό Τζόκερ στην φυλακή για πάντα…
