Δεύτερος παγκόσμιος Πόλεμος. Η Ράχελ, μια πανέμορφη και εκδηλωτική κοπέλα εβραϊκής καταγωγής, προκειμένου να γλυτώσει από τις διώξεις των γερμανών, σε βάρος της φυλής της, κρύβεται από καταφύγιο σε καταφύγιο, στην Ολλανδική επαρχία, που βρίσκεται κάτω από τον έλεγχο των ναζί. Χρησιμοποιώντας σαν μέσον τις γνωριμίες του πατέρα της, καταφέρνει προσωρινά να ξεφεύγει από τις παγίδες των κατοχικών δυνάμεων, βλέποντας όμως πως ο θάνατος βρίσκεται πολύ κοντά, θα πάρει το ρίσκο να ενταχθεί στην ομάδα των παρτιζάνων, που ανθίστανται στον γερμανικό ζυγό. Η πρώτη της αποστολή είναι να χρησιμοποιήσει την γοητεία, αλλά και την υπεροχη φωνή της, προκειμένου να προσεγγίσει ερωτικά αξιωματικό των SS, Μούντζε, κάποιες ανεξέλεγκτες καταστάσεις θα την οδηγήσουν όμως στο στόχαστρο τόσο του εχθρού αλλά και των ίδιων της των συντρόφων.
17ος αιώνας, Ολλανδία. Ένας καλλιτέχνης (Ντέιν ΝτεΧάαν) αναλαμβάνει να ζωγραφίσει το πορτρέτο μιας νεαρής γυναίκας (Αλίσια Βικάντερ) μετά από πρόταση του συζύγου της (Κρίστοφ Ουόλτς). Οι δύο νέοι, όμως, ερωτεύονται και αποφασίζουν να επενδύσουν στο εμπόριο τουλίπας, το οποίο τότε ήταν φοβερά επικερδές, ελπίζοντας ότι έτσι θα μπορέσουν να χτίσουν ένα μέλλον μαζί.
