Ein Feuerwehrmann mit Seltenheitswert: Wortgewandt, belesen und sensibel. Und eine Nase, so lang, dass sie die Umwelt nur so in Staunen versetzt. Doch blöde Bemerkungen läßt sich Feuerwehrhauptmann C.D. Bales nicht gefallen. Er weiß sich zu wehren: Er hat zwar eine lange Nase, doch ist er dafür nicht auf den Mund gefallen. Außerdem schwingt er seinen Tennisschläger wie einen Degen, falls ihm jemand zu nahe kommt. Aus der Fassung bringt C.D. erst die schöne Astronomin Roxanne. Aus Angst sich zu blamieren, wenn er ihr seine Gefühle gesteht, verschanzt er sich hinter glühenden Liebesbriefen, die er für seinen schüchternen, doch von Roxanne favorisierten Kollegen Chris schreibt. Doch als der bei Roxanne dann die Früchte der glühenden Umwerbung erntet, wirds C.D. – Nase oder nicht – zu viel.
