Die drei Bergsteiger Conrad Anker, Jimmy Chin und Renan Ozturk fassen den Plan, den Meru, einen mehr als 6000 Meter hohen Berg im Himalaya, über die berüchtigte „Shark`s Fin“-Route zu besteigen. Schon zahlreiche professionelle Sportler sind daran gescheitert. Auf ihrem Weg müssen sie verschiedensten Widrigkeiten trotzen, darunter einem Schneesturm, der sie einen Großteil ihrer Vorräte kostet. Fast erreichen sie die Spitze – und müssen doch umkehren. Vor allem Anker, der schon einige Jahre zuvor probierte, den Berg zu erklimmen, kann einfach nicht vor der Vorstellung ablassen, einen weiteren Versuch zu wagen. So kommen die Kletterer drei Jahre später wieder zusammen, um zu beenden, was sie begonnen haben. Ob ihnen nun gelingt, was niemand zuvor geschafft hat?

Das Yosemite Valley in Kalifornien gilt als Wiege der amerikanischen Kletterszene. Hier befinden sich weltbekannte Felsen wie der Half Dome oder El Capitan. Pioniere einer revolutionären Klettergeneration kamen bereits in den 1950er Jahren in das Tal – eine Zeit der gesellschaftlichen Um- und Aufbrüche! Aber was bewegt Menschen dazu, eine tausend Meter hohe, senkrechte Wand zu erklimmen? Ist es die sportliche Herausforderung, die Flucht vor Normen und Zwängen oder die Suche nach einem höheren Sinn?

Der 1944 in Südtirol geborene Reinhold Messner seitdem hat er die vierzehn Berge der Welt bestiegen, deren Höhepunkt mehr als 8.000 Meter beträgt, und kann sich insbesondere die Erstbesteigung des Everest allein und ohne Sauerstoff im Jahr 1980 zu eigen machen. Dieses Porträt besteht aus der Geschichte, die der Bergsteiger von seiner Reise erzählt hat sowie Zeugnisse seiner Lieben und Reisegefährten. Die Interviews sind durchsetzt mit rekonstruierten Szenen und Auszügen aus Archivfilmen, die von seinen Heldentaten erzählen. Doch von Hagiographie kann hier keine Rede sein, denn Messner schöpft seine Kraft auch aus seinen Misserfolgen. Wenn er nicht gerade klettert oder durch die Wüste streift, widmet dieser Unruhestifter seine Energie verschiedenen Zwecken. In seinem Schloss Juval in seiner Heimat Südtirol stellt er die Ausrüstung seiner Expeditionen sowie verschiedene Gegenstände, insbesondere tibetische, aus.

Tartarin sur les Alpes is a novel written by the French writer Alphonse Daudet in 1885. It is the second part of a trilogy which also includes Tartarin de Tarascon (published in 1885) and Porto Tarascona (published in 1890). Seeing his position as president of the Alpine Club of Tarascon threatened because of his fellow citizen Costecalde, who questions his abilities as a mountaineer, Tartarin travels to the Bernese Alps to accomplish a memorable feat. In 1968, a television transposition of Tartarino sulle Alpi was broadcast by Rai, directed by Edmo Fenoglio, with Tino Buazzelli as the protagonist. The series was broadcast between 06/09/968 and 09/27/1968.
