Værkets samlende karakter er den russiske ikonmaler Andrei Rublev. Filmen kredser om Rublevs såvel fysiske som mentale rejse gennem middelalderens Rusland. Den gennemgribende tematik i filmen er mennesket i relation til og som konsekvens af dets omverden - en tematik, der genfindes i flere af Tarkovskijs senere film.
'Den danske pige' handler om danskeren Einar Wegener, der var den første person, der fik en kønsskifteoperation. Nyhavn, 1924. I 1600-tallets Amsterdam bliver den forældreløse Sophia tvangsgift med den rige handelsmand Cornelis Sandvoort. Snart indleder hun en affære med den unge maler Jan, der er blevet hyret til at portrættere hende. I håb om at slippe ud af Sandvoort's greb sætter de elskende alt på højkant og kaster sig over det hektiske marked for tulipanløg. Håbet er, at det rette løg vil indtjene dem en formue og købe deres frihed.

Edvard Munch is a 1974 biographical film about the Norwegian Expressionist painter Edvard Munch, written and directed by Peter Watkins. It was originally created as a three-part miniseries co-produced by the Norwegian and Swedish state television networks NRK and SVT, but subsequently gained an American theatrical release in a three-hour version in 1976. The film covers about thirty years of Munch's life, focusing on the influences that shaped his art, particularly the prevalence of disease and death in his family and his youthful affair with a married woman. The film was screened at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival, but wasn't entered into the main competition.
