Historien foregår på den fremmedartede og tryllebindende måne kaldet Pandora. Her lever mere end tre meter høje, blå, menneskelignende væsner, Na'vi. Denne fremmede verden er rig på fantasifulde landskaber, væsener og ukendt beplantning. Mennesker kan ikke ånde den pandoriske luft, så de udvikler genetiske hybrider af mennesker, kaldet avatarer, som kan kontrolleres via en mental forbindelse på jorden. Avatar er historien om den tidligere soldat, Jack, der i skikkelse af sin avatar kastes ud på endannelsesrejse gennem Pandoras forunderlige verden.

Ellen Ripley er eneste overlevende på et kommercielt rumskib efter et angreb fra et ondsindet alien. Efter at have ligget i dvale og drevet rundt i rummet i 50 års tid, er planeten, hvor den onde skabning blev fundet, i mellemtiden blevet bosat af kolonister. Da Imperiet for nys om at oprørerne har gemt sig på isplaneten Hoth, bliver sagen overdraget til Darth Vader. Han sætter en stor landstyrke ind for at knuse oprørshæren, der trods heroisk modstand til sidst må flygte. Han Solo, Prinsesse Leia og droiderne R2-D2 og C-3P0 søger tilflugt på planeten Bespin hos Solos gamle ven Lando Calrissian. I mellemtiden opsøger Luke Skywalker den gamle Jedimester Yoda for at udvikle sine evner og samle kræfter til endnu et slag mod ondskaben.

Ripley styrter ned på planeten Fiorina 161, en nu nedlagt straffeplanet, hvor kun en håndfuld fanger er blevet tilbage og arbejder i det enorme stålvalseværk. Til sin rædsel opdager hun at en alien er skyld i uheldet, og det frygtindgydende monster begynder at jage de rædselsslagne fanger. Ripley og Co. må kæmpe desperat for overlevelse, mens de venter på at hjælpen når frem.

Gardner Elliot bliver, som det første menneske nogensinde, født på Mars. Hans mor dør i forbindelse med fødslen, og når ikke at fortælle ham, hvem hans far er. Han vokser op med kun 14 mennesker omkring sig, og da han er blevet stor, sætter han sig for at tage til Jorden og finde sin far.

Fire outsidere, der jagter rumaffald og vidtløftige drømme i år 2092, afslører sprængfarlige hemmeligheder, da de forsøger at sælge en blåøjet humanoide.
