Peter LaFleur (Vince Vaughn) er en charmerende anti-stræber, som ejer det nedslidte helsestudie Average Joe’s. Da den egocentriske, opblæste White Goodman (Ben Stiller), som ejer det moderigtige, hypermoderne helsecenter Globo Gym, sætter sig for at overtage Peters ydmyge sted, bl.a. ved hjælp af den smukke advokat, Kate Veatch (Christine Taylor) danner Peter og hans faste lille klientel af sociale tabere et dodgeball-hold og stiller op i en turnering, hvor førstepræmien lige præcis er de $50.000, som Peter står og mangler for at redde Average Joe’s.
