Rango, en kamæleon i identitetskrise, har aldrig været uden for sit terrarium, før han falder ud af sin ejers bil under en køretur gennem Mojaveørkenen. Her finder han flækken med det sigende navn Støv, hvor der er noget ravruskende galt med vandforsyningen. Rango påtager sig ønskerollen som byens sherif. Han erfarer dog snart, at der er stor forskel på at spille helt og så rent faktisk at være det.
En vinteraften finder universitetslæreren Parker en forladt hundehvalp på den lokale togstation. Det bliver starten på et smukt venskab. Parker tager den lille hund under sine vinger og navngiver den Hachiko. Hver dag følger Hachiko ham til toget, og hver aften kommer den ham i møde, når han står af toget igen. Og selv da Parker ikke længere kommer hjem med toget, venter Hachiko trofast på ham hver eneste dag.
Den tamme papegøje Blu regnes for den sidste af sin art, men så får hans ejer nys om, at der findes en mage til Blu i Rio de Janeiro. Ved ankomsten til Brasilien når Blu knap nok at møde sin udkårne Jewel, før begge bliver kidnappet af fæle smuglere. Det lykkes de to araer at undslippe, men for at overleve i det fri må Blu lære at flyve - en kundskab, han aldrig har haft brug for i sit trygge bur.
