Vi befinder os i 1500-tallets Japan. Bønderne i en lille by er trætte af hele tiden at blive overfaldet og plyndret af banditter. Byens vise mænd råder dem til at rekruttere nogle samuraier - professionelle krigere - der kan beskytte dem mod overfaldene. Det varer ikke længe, før syv meget forskellige samuraier har stillet sig til disposition.
Da den regerende shoguns bestialske bror, Naritsugu, går over stregen i drab og voldtægter, hyres samuraien Shimada til at gøre en ende på udyret. Shimada samler 13 toptrænede samuraier, der skal op mod overmagten i form af Naritsugus hær bestående af mindst 200 mand. Men Shimada har en plan, der kulminerer i et 50 minutter langt vildt, vanvittigt og visuelt opgør, der overgår alt, hvad man tidligere har set i genren.

Under en gigantisk, faldefærdig port i udkanten af 1100-tallets Kyoto har en præst, en skovhugger og en dagdriver søgt tilflugt fra den silende regn. Præsten og skovhuggeren har forinden vidnet i en retssag omkring mordet på en mand og voldtægten af hans hustru i en nærliggende skov. Mens de venter på, at vejret skal klare op, diskuterer de tre mænd den sælsomme process, hvor ingen af førstehåndsvidnernes forklaringer syntes at korrespondere med hinanden. Historien om, hvad der fandt sted i skoven, genfortælles på skift af banditten Tajomaru, kvinden, et medie repræsenterende den afdøde mand samt af skovhuggeren
I 1630'erne myldrer Japan med såkaldte ronins - herreløse samuraier, som efter en lang fredstid har mistet deres arbejde. Den ensomme vandrer Hanshiro Tsugumo henvender sig til en feudalherre for at få lov at begå harakiri på et værdigt sted, men da feudalherren begynder at tale om en yngre samurai, der henvendte sig tidligere, tager alt en uventet drejning.
Samuraien Manji er blevet overmandet af en massiv flok dusørjægere, men på dødens rand skærer en mystisk troldkarl ham op og sætter hellige blod-orme i hans mave. Manji bliver udødelig, og 50 år senere trækker han stadig med denne gave og forbandelse, da en ung pige opsøger ham for at få hævn over sine myrdede forældre. Og så kan I ellers godt begynde jeres bodycount!
En omvandrende sulten samurai, ankommer til en lille by, der er splittet mellem to rivaliserende købmænd. Han øjner chancen for at spille de to grupper ud mod hinanden for at tjene penge. Pludselig dukker en bror til en af rivalerne op. Han er bevæbnet med en revolver men op imod samuraiens sværd er den intet værd.
I det feudale Japan, under en blodig krig mellem klaner, støder to kujonagtige og grådige bønder, soldater fra en besejret hær, på en mystisk mand, der fører dem til en fæstning skjult i bjergene.
Throne of Blood er baseret på Shakespeares skuespil Macbeth, men den er så meget mere end bare en almindelig adaptation af det berømte stykke. Historien udspiller sig i Japan under samuraiernes storhedstid. Vi følger en hærleder, som på grund sin kones magtbegær lader sig overtale til at myrde lederen af den selvsamme klan, som han er medlem af. Den slags forræderi betaler sig sjældent, så der går ikke lang tid, før klanens øvrige divisioner rejser sig mod ham, og det hele bliver en kamp om, hvem der nu skal besidde tronen og bestyre klanen.

Da Lord Matsudaira begår den fejltagelse at fryse Lady Ichi - en af sine konkubiner - ud og tvinge Isaburos søn Yogoro til at gifte sig med hende, er han uvidende om de fatale konsekvenser, som hans handlinger kommer til at få. Ichi og Yogoro bliver omstændighederne til trods forelskede i hinanden - en kærlighedshistorie der tvinger Isaburo til for første gang i sit liv til at handle mod sin herres befalinger og forsvare sin søn - en beslutning der leder mod alles undergang....
En klanherre er draget bort for en stund, hvilket giver et par af hans undersåtter anledning til at planlægge et kup. En gruppe unge samuraier fatter mistanke og er fast besluttet på at komme herrens familie og kammerherre – som er blevet kidnappet af de skurkagtige komplotmagere – til undsætning. En døsig Sanjuro viser sig nu på scenen og rådgiver de unge og voldsomt naive samuraier til at handle med hovedet og ikke lade følelserne løbe af med sig. Til at begynde med er de noget skeptiske over for den snuskede og taktløse lejesoldat, men efter at han har bevist sin snilde og kampevne i flere situationer, overgiver de unge helte sig efterhånden til Sanjuros ledelse.
Den gamle, blinde vandringsmand Zatoichi ernærer sig som massør og hasardspiller i det 19. århundredes Japan. Trods alderen har han dog ikke mistet sine fantastiske evner som samurai, og sværdet svinges stadig med lige dele hurtighed og præcision. Zatoichi kommer til en lille by i bjergene, der hærges af den onde Ginzo og hans kumpaner, som ikke holder sig tilbage i deres nådesløse tag på byen. Den unge nyuddannede Dr. Yasumoto ankommer til en fattigt landhospital, ledet af Dr. Niide – Rødskæg. Han er ambitiøs og arrogant uden særlig interesse for sine fattige patienter og finder, at Rødskæg er en krævende arbejdsgiver. Rødskæg er fuldstændig dedikeret til sine patienter og forlanger en asketisk livsførelse af sine ansatte. I mødet med Rødskæg ændrer Yasumoto langsomt holdning til sine patienter og begynder at engagere sig i deres liv.
1500-tallets Japan hærges af borgerkrig, men keramikeren Genjuro og hans svoger Tobe er kun optaget af at få opfyldt deres personlige ambitioner. Genjuro ønsker at tjene store penge på sit lertøj, mens Tobe tragter efter at blive samurai. Begge lader sig forføre af deres drømme, og det fører de to mænd væk fra deres trofaste hustruer. Kenji Mizoguchis poetiske fabel var med til at sætte japansk film på landkortet og regnes som en af verdens bedste film.

Like so many other jidaigeki, it falls in the category of kanzen-chōaku, loosely, "rewarding good and punishing evil."

Shadow Warriors is a Japanese television jidaigeki show featuring Sonny Chiba that ran for four seasons in the early 1980s. Chiba played different ninja characters in each series. In the first series he played Hattori Hanzō III, in second one he played Tsuge Shinpachi, in the third one he played Tarao Hanzō, in the fourth series and in Bakumatsu Hen, he played Hattori Hanzō XV. In the 2003 direct-to-DVD series Shin Kage no Gundan he played Hattori Hanzō I.

Kazutoyo lived during the end of the Sengoku period (1546-1605). He was the first feudal lord of the fief of Tosa on the island of Shikoku. He served Nobunaga Oda, Hideyoshi Toyotomi and Tokugawa Ieyasu. Chiyo (1557-1617) was his wife, and was known in history for her dedication and devotion to her husband (like Matsu was to Toshiie in Toshiie to Matsu). She is the daughter of a samurai who served the feudal lord Asai.

Ryōmaden is the 49th NHK Taiga drama. It was shown on NHK from January 3 to November 28, 2010 spanning 48 episodes. The story centers on the life of 19th-century Japanese historical figures Iwasaki Yatarō and Sakamoto Ryōma. It has been announced that the series will be aired in several other countries, for example Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.
The drama series depicts the life of Tokugawa Ieyasu (January 31, 1543 – June 1, 1616). Takechiyo (who later becomes Tokugawa Ieyasu) was born as the son of a poor and powerless daimyo. Takechiyo lost his father during a war. He grew up lonely and away from his mother. Takechiyo didn't have a clue about what his future would hold. He then has a dramatic meeting with the young Oda Nobunaga.
Daichūshingura is a television dramatization of the events of the Forty-seven Ronin. The first episode aired on January 5, 1971, and the 52nd and final episode appeared on December 28 of the same year. The NET network broadcast it in the Tuesday evening 9:00–9:56 prime-time slot in Japan. The series featured an all-star cast. The central actor was Toshiro Mifune, who portrayed Ōishi Kuranosuke; Yoko Tsukasa his wife; and kabuki actor Onoe Kikugorō VII their son Chikara.

Saigo Takamori, the hero of the Meiji Restoration, was born to a poor, low-ranking samurai family in the Satsuma domain (present day Kagoshima Prefecture). His simple honesty caught the attention of its charismatic feudal lord of Satsuma, Shimazu Nariakira. Nariakira’s assertion that the love of people is what will enrich and strengthen the nation captivated Saigo who took on Nariakira’s secret mission and eventually became a key person for Satsuma. Not a portrait of him survives today and much of his life is a mystery. He is a man who was twice exiled and thrice married. He overthrew the Tokugawa Shogunate with exceptional bravery and action. Although he accomplished the restoration, he lost his life in a fight with the new Meiji government.
