Den ensomme vandrer Hanshiro Tsugumo henvender sig til en feudalherre for at få lov at begå harakiri på et værdigt sted, men da feudalherren begynder at tale om en yngre samurai, der henvendte sig tidligere, tager alt en uventet drejning.

Historien udspiller sig i Japan under samuraiernes storhedstid. Vi følger en hærleder, som på grund sin kones magtbegær lader sig overtale til at myrde lederen af den selvsamme klan, som han er medlem af. Den slags forræderi betaler sig sjældent, så der går ikke lang tid, før klanens øvrige divisioner rejser sig mod ham, og det hele bliver en kamp om, hvem der nu skal besidde tronen og bestyre klanen.

Ichi og Yogoro bliver omstændighederne til trods forelskede i hinanden - en kærlighedshistorie der tvinger Isaburo til for første gang i sit liv til at handle mod sin herres befalinger og forsvare sin søn - en beslutning der leder mod alles undergang....

En gruppe unge samuraier fatter mistanke og er fast besluttet på at komme herrens familie og kammerherre – som er blevet kidnappet af de skurkagtige komplotmagere – til undsætning. En døsig Sanjuro viser sig nu på scenen og rådgiver de unge og voldsomt naive samuraier til at handle med hovedet og ikke lade følelserne løbe af med sig. Til at begynde med er de noget skeptiske over for den snuskede og taktløse lejesoldat, men efter at han har bevist sin snilde og kampevne i flere situationer, overgiver de unge helte sig efterhånden til Sanjuros ledelse.

Den gamle, blinde vandringsmand Zatoichi ernærer sig som massør og hasardspiller i det 19. århundredes Japan. Trods alderen har han dog ikke mistet sine fantastiske evner som samurai, og sværdet svinges stadig med lige dele hurtighed og præcision. Zatoichi kommer til en lille by i bjergene, der hærges af den onde Ginzo og hans kumpaner, som ikke holder sig tilbage i deres nådesløse tag på byen. 1500-tallets Japan hærges af borgerkrig, men keramikeren Genjuro og hans svoger Tobe er kun optaget af at få opfyldt deres personlige ambitioner. Genjuro ønsker at tjene store penge på sit lertøj, mens Tobe tragter efter at blive samurai. Begge lader sig forføre af deres drømme, og det fører de to mænd væk fra deres trofaste hustruer. Although he accomplished the restoration, he lost his life in a fight with the new Meiji government.
