Toto je neamerický film, který k žánru přistupuje z jiného úhlu. Má dvě navzájem provázané dějové linie: první je milostný příběh mezi mladým šéfkuchařem a dívkou ze sousedství, která je epidemioložka; druhou je propuknutí záhadné nákazy v různých částech světa, která způsobuje, že postihnutí lidé ztrácí nejprve čich, poté chuť a nakonec i sluch.

Vztah šíleně zamilovaného mladého páru začíná trpět, když se snaží otěhotnět.

Jackie pracuje jako operátorka bezpečnostního kamerového systému CCTV, jehož kamerami je skotské Glasgow neustále monitorováno. Život v ulicích Glasgowa pozoruje Jackie denně na monitorech a svou povinnost chránit lidi, které zná pouze z obrazovek, bere velmi vážně. Sama si však drží všechny od těla, její uzavřený život má svůj řád a klid – až do chvíle, kdy na monitoru zahlédne muže, o kterém si myslela, že už ho nikdy neuvidí. Posedlost, s níž neznámého muže začne pronásledovat, ji brzo dovede do Red Road, shluku strohých domovních bloků na severním okraji Glasgow. Jackiino skrývané tajemství tady začně vyplouvat na povrch a drama o posedlosti tak směřuje k překvapivému rozuzlení.

Rok 2021. Lidé žijí spokojeně a šťastně a skandálních námětů je stále méně. Když televizní štáb zjistí, že Katherine Mortenhoe umírá na rakovinu, přesvědčí dobrodruha Roddyho, aby si nechal do levého oka voperovat miniaturní kameru, pověsil se na paty nešťastné ženě a snímal prakticky každý její krok. Roddy musí dbát na dvě věci, pravidelně ošetřovat oční kameru speciálním roztokem a nesmí oko nechat déle než pět minut potmě, jinak oslepne. Honička za umírající zpočátku vypadá jako rutinní plnění povinností, ale když se Roddy s Katherine sblíží, dochází mu zrůdnost celé akce. Couvnout však už nelze… Málokdo v době uvedení snímku na plátna kin tušil, že hlavní představitelce zbývá necelého půldruhého roku života. Vedle ní a Harveye Keitela si nelze nevšimnout Maxe von Sydowa, zato jen málokdo v tehdejší době zaregistroval Robbieho Coltranea v roli řidiče limuzíny.

Dospívající Liam, kterého touha po rodině a lepším životě zavede na cestu zločinu, je vyhrocenou obdobou hrdiny většiny Loachových filmů, jimiž poukazuje na zhoubné důsledky chudoby a nezájmu společnosti o sociálně slabé. Paul Laverty, od spolupráce na tomto filmu stálý režisérův scenárista, získal v roce 2002 v Cannes cenu za nejlepší scénář. (52nd KVIFF)
