El doctor Richard Kimble, és acusat d'assassinar a la seva esposa Hellen. Per l'enregistrament telefònic efectuat pel Departament d'Emergència de la Policia, assumeixen que Kimble és el culpable. En el judici Richard Kimble és condemnat a la pena cabdal sent innocent. L'autobús en el que viatjava cap a la presó amb altres presoners, pateix un accident provocat pels reclusos i cau per un vessant.
