Renaixement italià, principis del segle XVI (Cinquecento). Quan el papa Juli II encarrega a Miquel Àngel que pinti el sostre de la Capella Sixtina, l'artista rebutja la feina. El Papa ho obliga a acceptar-ho, però Miquel Àngel destrueix la seva obra i fuig de Roma. Quan, per fi, reprèn el projecte, aquest es converteix en un enfrontament de fèrries voluntats, avivat per constants diferències artístiques i temperamentals.
