Any 1870. El capità Nathan Algren, un veterà de la guerra civil americana, va al Japó amb la missió d'ensenyar els japonesos com funcionen les armes que els venen els americans. La prioritat de l'emperador japonès, que vol modernitzar el seu país, és acabar amb els últims samurais. Katsumoto, l'últim líder d'aquest llinatge, captura el capità Algren, que ha resultat ferit. Durant la convalescència, Algren i Katsumoto establiran una relació que durà l'americà a aprendre el codi d'honor i les tradicions dels antics guerrers japonesos.
La pel·lícula és una adaptació de la famosa "Llegenda dels 47 ronin", que ja ha estat adaptada a la pantalla en diverses ocasions i que és considerada al Japó com una llegenda nacional, i posa de manifest el codi d'honor samurai per excel·lència: el Bushido. Ens trobem al segle XVII, al Japó feudal. Kai (Keanu Reeves, 'The Matrix') és un pària que s'uneix al líder dels 47 Ronin, 47 guerrers sense amo que van haver de convertir-se en outsiders després que el seu senyor fos obligat a cometre sepukku (suïcidi a l'estil samurai), Oishi (Hiroyuki Sanada, 'L'ocàs del samurai'). Junts lluitaran per venjar-se del traïdor que va matar el seu senyor i els va condemnar al desterrament. Per restablir l'honor a la seva terra natal, els guerrers es llancen a una recerca plena de dures proves capaces de destruir qualsevol.

Set in the 18th century, the show follows the Shogun Yoshimune, who likes to disguise himself as a low-ranking samurai and go into his capital of Edo to see the life of the common man, as well as to seek out and punish evildoers who would hurt his citizens. He is aided by Magistrate Oo'oka and a vivacious fireman, Tatsugoro, as well as a rotating cast of other recurring characters. Along with Zenigata Heiji and Mito Kōmon, it ranks among the longest-running series in the jidaigeki genre. Like so many other jidaigeki, it falls in the category of kanzen-chōaku, loosely, "rewarding good and punishing evil."
