Cercant tranquil·litat per poder escriure una novel·la, Jack Torrance es trasllada amb la seva dona Wendy i el seu fill Danny, de set anys, a l'impressionant hotel Overlook, a les muntanyes de Colorado, per encarregar-se del manteniment de les instal·lacions durant la temporada hivernal.
