La humanitat va perdent la guerra contra els Kaijus, unes enormes bèsties que sorgeixen del fons de l'oceà Pacífic i que en cada atac destrueixen ciutats i maten desenes de milers de persones. Els Jaegers, unes màquines gegants construïdes per fer front a aquests monstres alienígenes, no van donar els resultats esperats i van ser retirats de la circulació.
