Mit o Jesseju Owensu narastao je do neslućenih visina ne samo zbog njegovih sjajnih sportskih rezultata, nego i zbog odnosa Hitlera prema njemu i njegovim pobjedama. Hitler je namjeravao iskoristiti Olimpijske igre u Berlinu (1936. godine) kao promociju nacističkog režima i demonstraciju arijevske superiornosti nad ostatkom svijeta. Činjenica je da je Njemačka bila najuspješnija država na igrama u Berlinu, ali je taj njemački uspjeh bio bačen u sjenku jednog nearijevca, Afroamerikanca, koji je superiorno trijumfovao nad njemačkim sportašima.
