تدور احداث الفيلم في نهاية السبعينيات، نجد أن (فيتو كورليوني) قد شارف على الستينيات من عمره. يدمره الشعور بالذنب عن أفعاله القاسية والحادة، خصوصا قيامه بقتله أخيه (فريدو). تقريبا قد تقاعد (مايكل) عن كل الأعمال الخاصة بأسرة كيرليوني وترك الأمور الإجرامية ليديرها مساعده (جوي)، ويحاول استخدام ثروته الهائلة في تحسين سمعته عبر القيام بالعديد من الأعمال الخيرية. (مايكل) و(كاي) حصلا على الطلاق، وترك (مايكل) لـ (كاى) حضانة طفليهما (مريم) و(أنتوني).

يتناول العمل القصة الحقيقية للأب جابريال أمورث، والذي كرس وقته لطرد الأرواح الشريرة في الفاتيكان، وخاض العديد من القصص الغريبة والمرعبة.

يتقاعد العميل (إيثان هانت) من عمليات التدريب، لكن يُطلب منه العودة للعمل مرة أخرى لمواجهة تاجر سلاح ومعلومات دولية، يقوم (إيثان) بإعادة لم شمل فريقه بهدف تنفيذ مهمة جديدة، وتتعرض زوجته للخطر أثناء تنفيذ العملية، ويُضطر إيثان لتمديد وقت المهمة بهدف إنقاذ زوجته.
