خلال عشية عيد الميلاد الهادئة بمقاطعة مايلز، ينطلق المهرج أرت في رحلة دموية جديدة، وينشر الفوضى والذعر في نفوس السكان مع توالي جرائمه السادية.

في قالب من التشويق واﻹثارة، يتتبع الفيلم الحيوات الشخصية المتشابكة والمتداخلة ﻷفراد إحدى وحدات مقاطعة لوس أنجلوس، ومجموعة من اللصوص الذين قاموا بأنجح عملية سرقة في الولاية والذين يخططون لعملية سطو مستحيلة التنفيذ على البنك الفيدرالي في لوس أنجلوس.

تدور أحداث الفيلم حول شخص يرتكب العديد من جرائم القتل ويسمي نفسه (زودياك)، وبعد كل جريمة قتل يتصل بالشرطة ليخبرهم بكل التفاصيل حول الجرائم ويقوم بإرسال رسالات مبهمة للصحافة، فينطلق رجل شرطة، وصحفي ورسام كاريكاتور في ملاحقته.

بينما يحاول المراهق (أوين) المضي قدمًا في حياته بالضواحي، تعرض عليه زميلته بالفصل فكرة مشاهدة برنامج يدور حول عالم خارق للطبيعية يقع تحت عالم البشر، وبمرور الوقت والمستقبل يبدأ واقع (أوين) في الانهيار.

قصة حب محيرة للعقل تتبع جريج الذي بعد أن طلق مؤخرًا ثم طُرد من العمل ، يلتقي بإيزابيل الغامضة ، وهي امرأة تعيش في الشوارع وعلى قناعة بأن العالم الملوث والمكسور من حولهم هو مجرد محاكاة للكمبيوتر. مريبًا في البداية ، اكتشف جريج في النهاية أنه قد يكون هناك بعض الحقيقة في مؤامرة إيزابيل الجامحة.

في إطار درامي رومانسي، تدور أحداث الفيلم حول (نانسي) الفتاة التي تقابل شابًا عن طريق الخطأ بعد بحث مُضنٍ حول أفضل الطرق لمواعدة الرجال، حيث أنه ينتظر ميعادًا مع شابة في الرابعة والعشرين من العمر، والتي لم يرها من قبل، ولكنه يختلط عليه الأمر، ويعتقد أنها (نانسي)، ولم تصحح له الأمر، إلى أن يكتشف أمرها بعد أن كانت تعتبره أخيرًا أفضل حبيب لها في حياتها.

تبدأ مجموعة من الغرباء تحصّنوا داخل إحدى الحانات في "مدريد" بعد أن شهدوا جريمة قتل في الانقلاب ضد بعضهم حيث تفوح رائحة الهلع... والموت.
