بينما تستعد نجمة البوب العالمية (سكاي رايلي) للشروع في جولة غنائية حول العالم، تصادف العديد من الأحداث المرعبة والغير قابلة للتفسير، مما يضعها في مواجهة حتمية مع ماضيها.

تعتقد ليلي أنها وجدت الحب الحقيقي مع رايل، إلا أن حادث صعب يؤدي إلى الرجوع لصدمة سابقة تجعلها تفكر ما إذا كان الحب وحده كافي لاستمرار زواجها، لكن الأمور تزداد صعوبة عندما يعود حبها الأول لحياتها مرة أخرى.

يروي الفيلم قصة تشارلي ذاك الفتى المُنعزل في حياته، وبداية أيامه في الثانوية، بعد أن مر بطفولة صعبة، ومتوسطة سيئة، فتى قد عاني من مشاكل في صغره. . مشاكل نفسية أدت إلى انعزاله واصابته بالتوحد، فهو شخصية انطوائية مُنعزلة غير مشهور ودائماً ما يُسخر منه، يخاف من المُشاركة في أي شيء. . ولا يقوى على رد الكلام لمن يتكلم عليه، يكتم غضبة وحزنه بداخله، ولا يخرجه لا لعائلة ولا لأصدقاء، فلا أصدقاء له، ولا يود لعائلته ان تحزن عليه ويقلقهم في مشكلته الخاصة، فيروي جميع ما يحصل له في دفترة الخاص مُخاطباً شخصية خيالية قد رسمها لنفسه في مُخيلته، يتعرف على مجموعة من الأصدقاء المُوشكين على التخرج من الثانوية في سنتهم الأخيرة، ويبدأ شيء فشيء في التغير يقع في حُب فتاة أكبر منه بسنتين ويحاول كتم حبه لها وسرد ما في قلبه في كتابة ما يُريد.

تتكشف الأحداث على مدار إحدى الليالي الصادمة في باريس بترتيب زمني عكسي حيث تعرضت أليكس الجميلة للاغتصاب والضرب بوحشية من قبل شخص غريب في النفق. يتولى صديقها وعشيقها السابق زمام الأمور بأنفسهم من خلال توظيف مجرمين لمساعدتهما في العثور على المغتصب حتى يتمكنوا من الانتقام. فحص جميل ورهيب في نفس الوقت للطبيعة المدمرة للسبب والنتيجة ، وكيف يدمر الوقت كل شيء.

جائت الممثلة الشابة ديان "ناعومي واتس" من كندا وكلها آمال وطموحات بأن تصبح نجمة كبيرة في عالم هوليوود وتذهب هي وكاميلا وعدد من الممثلات الجدد للاختبار امام احد المخرجين الكبار "بوب" ليختار بينهم نجمة الفيلم القادم ..يختار المخرج الممثلة كاميلا للدور وتبدأ علاقة صداقة تتكون بين ديان وكاميلا التي ساعدتها كثيراً واختارت لها ادوار عديدة صغيرة في افلامها ومع مرور الوقت تتحول علاقة الصداقة لعلاقة غير سوية بين ديان وكاميلا حتي جاء اليوم الذي طلبت فيه كاميلا من ديان التوقف عن هذا الفعل فأصيبت ديان بالاكتئاب وعاشت منعزلة فترة بغرفتها ..حاولت كاميلا تلطيف الاجواء وقامت بدعوة ديان لحضور حفل علي طريق مولهولاند .قبلت ديان الدعوة علي امل ان تعود الاوضاع كما كانت مع كاميلا لكن تتفاجئ ديان بأن الحفل كان لاعلان خطوبة صديقتها من المخرج ادم.. وتتوالى أحداث الفيلم..

تحاول فادا الطالبة بالمدرسة الثانوية رفقة صديقتها ميا التعامل مع مأساة حدثت في المدرسة، بينما تتغير علاقتها مع عائلتها وأصدقائها ونظرتها للحياة بشكل عام.

يبدأ الفيلم بعبارة "أنه عندما ترفرف فراشة بجناحيها في مكان ما، فهي تحدث ريحا تؤدي توابعه إلى هبوب إعصار في مكان آخر بعيد"، (إيفان ) شاب كان يعانى فى طفولته من مشكلة فى الذاكرة، وهى أن بعض الأحداث لا يستطيع تذكرها، حتى وهو تحت تأثير التنويم الإيحائي، وعندما يكبر يكتشف قدرته على تذكر هذه الأحداث بكل دقة، بل يستطيع التعديل فيها، ويبدأ التعديل، فعلا، رغبة منه فى الوصول إلى قلب حبيبته ( كايلي )، وبالفعل يحصل على ذلك، ولكن لاتسير الأمور كما يريد، فيعود لنقطة أخرى من الماضي، كمحاولة للإصلاح، ولكن الأحداث تتمادى في السوء.

يتبع العمل قصة "بو"، والذي عاش طيلة حياته متأثرًا بعلاقته السلبية مع والدته، وحينما تموت، ينطلق في مغامرة إلى منزل الطفولة في رحلة مليئة بالمخاطر.

تجد امرأة شابة منعزلة عن مجتمعها نفسها في مواجهة مجموعة من الكائنات الفضائية التي تهدد مستقبلها بينما تجبرها على التعامل مع ماضيها.
