تدور أحداث الفيلم حول ثلاثة من (آل سكوت) الذين يقضون آخر ليلة لهم في معسكر خارجي، ولكنهم يجدون أنفسهم أمام انتشار عدوى الزومبي، والآن عليهم أن ينقذوا أصدقاءهم والبشرية عمومًا من انتشار هذه العدوى. أثناء ذلك يكتشفون معنى الصداقة الحقيقي عند وقوفهم بجانب بعضهم في مواجهة الزومبي.
ديفيد بيرك (سوديكيس) بعد أن يقوم ثلاثة من لصوص بسرقة بضاعته ونقوده يجد نفسه غارقاً في الديون مع براد (إد هيلمز) صديقة في العمل، ومن أجل تسديد ديونه والنجاة بحياته؛ على ديفيد أن يصبح مهرباً لصالح براد، وأن يجلب له شحنة مخدرات من المكسيك. يستعين ديفيد بمجموعة من جيرانه من ضمنهم سينسيل (جينيفر أنيستون)، يؤكد ديفيد لهم أنه وضع خطة مضمونة بأن يدعون جميعاً بأنهم عائلة تستقل سيارة إعاشة في طريقها إلى قضاء عطلة سعيدة إلى المكسيك، ولكن خلال رحلتهم تتعقد الأمور إلي حد لم يتخيلوه.
يحكي قصة ثلاثة طلاب سينمائيين توجهوا إلى إحدى غابات ماريلاند في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، لعمل فيلم وثائقي عن ساحرة مشهورة جدا تدعى (بلير حسن نعمه ) تعذب الأطفال،، إلا أنهم اختفوا وضاع أثرهم بعد سلسلة من التجارب المرعبة. والفيلم هو ما تم العثور عليه من أشرطة صورتها عدسات الطلاب بعد مرور عام على اختفائهم.
بعد التخرج من جامعة إيموري في عام 1992 ، تخلى الطالب والرياضي كريستوفر ماكاندلس عن ممتلكاته ، وقدم كامل حساب التوفير البالغ 24000 دولار للجمعيات الخيرية ، وركوب الخيل في ألاسكا للعيش في البرية.
بعد أن تم طرده من الغابة، يحاول (وودي) نقار الخشب، العثور على منزل جديد، ويعثر أخيرًا على ضالته في مخيم جميل، لكن أحلامه تصطدم بمفتش متزمِت يسعى لطرده.
