تنتقل (سيسليا) المرأة شديدة التدين إلى الريف الإيطالي للعمل بعد حصولها على فرصة عمل بدير هناك، وبمرور الوقت تكتشف أن المكان يحمل الكثير من الأسرار المظلمة.

يطلِبَ من ماريا القاطنة بدير في سالزبورغ اﻻعتناء بـ7 أطفال أبوهم ضابط بحري، وأمهم متوفاة، تقبل على مضض وعندما تصل لمنزل عائلة تراب تكتشف أن جورج صارم مع أولاده، فتشعر بألفة تجاههم وتصير أمَّـا بديلة لهم، وتعلمهم الغناء والموسيقى، يذهب جورج لملاقاة صديقة في حفل عشاء وتعود معه للمنزل إذ من المقرر أن يتزوجا وتصبح أمّا بديلة للأولاد، حينما يعود يستاء جدا من تصرفات ماريا تجاه أطفاله.
