في أثناء مطاردة المحققين (ريجز ومورتا) أحد أفراد عصابة لتهريب المخدرات، يستطيع المجرم الهرب لكنهما يستطيعان مصادرة سيارته التى وجدا بها ما يعادل مليون دولار من العملات الذهبية، لكن المطاردة تتسبب في كثير من الخسائر، فيقرر مديرهما معاقبتهما بجعلهما مرافقين لحماية لو بيجز الذي سيقوم بالشهادة في قضية كبرى، ينجحا، في إنقاذه من محاولة القتل، ويكتشفان أنه متخصص في عملية غسيل الأموال لتجار المخدرات، يتتبعان الأسماء التي يعطيها لهما، فيكتشفان أنها لها علاقة بأحد الموظفين الكبار في السفارة الجنوب أفريقية.

تدور احداث فيلم حول تلك المرة، الشرطي جون ماكلين (بروس ويلز) يجد نفسه في موسكو لمساعده ابنه "جاك"، محاولا تقديم مساعدات كثيرة لإنقاذه، وإذا به يكتشف أن جاك أحد عملاء جهاز المخابرات المركزية الأمريكية، وأنه قد تلقى تدريبات عالية لوقف سرقة الأسلحة النووية، فيتمكن ماكلين وجاك من تكوين ثناني ذي أسلوب معين لتحقيق هدفهما.
